Different reactions have been sparked on X by the arrest and the shockingly large amount of money, which is a trending subject. Among other recoveries, several crates containing fictitious US dollars, military boots, and reflector jackets for customs were discovered to be pilfered jungle fatigues intended for APS officers.

The foreigners were informed via a WhatsApp call by a caller registered under the name “Canopy Shield Agencies” that their consignment of forty pallets had been held at the Kenya Customs Warehouse pending the payment of a USD 36,000 duty fee. This was all part of an orchestrated fraudulent scheme.

The complainants allegedly agreed into a cash-on-transit agreement with the Central Bank of Togo involving USD 439 trillion that was going to Dubai. The complainants were persuaded by the caller, who was impersonating a customs officer, that the first 40 pallets were carrying USD 4 billion and were being flown through Kenya to expedite their clearance and easy entry into Dubai. The foreign nationals had scheduled a flight to the nation and arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with the intention of immediately paying the necessary duty fee.

STATEMENT RELEASED BY THE DCI THROUGH TWITTER

The DCI stated on X that “a contact person led the two foreigners at the warehouse where the purported consignment was being held, unaware that detectives had learned of the ongoings.”

The operations team stormed the warehouse as the eight suspects, unaware that the detectives had set a trap for them, busied themselves convincing their targets to part with the USD 36,000. DCI stated, “They were all cornered and taken away into police cells: Moses Otieno, Peter Aura, Brian Waweru, John Kalombo, Peter Kisanya, Noah Ouma, Charity Njeri, and Mercy Cheptoo.” The procedure Is still going on with the two foreign nationals being investigated in order to clarify the specifics of the business deal
